☈ strike #07 (action)

[ So. Even though there seems to be an 'experiment' in full swing this week, several days later Lightning still has yet to be affected for some reason. Not that she's complaining, of course, considering she has several new problems on her hands anyway-- namely, the recent appearance of both Hope and Sazh to Luceti. Talk about complicated. Needless to say, Soldier Girl here needs another outlet; therefore, she has decided to develop a new skill:

Knife-throwing.

Because clearly, being a superpowered, magic-slinging former-sergeant trained in the use of a gunblades and bazookas and airships and who knows what else doesn't make her quite dangerous enough. Yeah, she knows the basics of using a knife in hand, and she can throw one fairly decently already, but that... is not enough.

And so she's practicing, outside near the forest and in a particularly snowy patch of ground- this is because not only is she working on her ability to toss sharp objects, but is trying to improve her maneuverability in the snow at the same time as well. After all, you never know when something like that might become important.

She probably makes an interesting sight too, holding a knife out in front of her like she's taking aim, but then turning around completely and launching herself backwards into not just one flip, but two - briefly touching down between them, off-hand braced in the snow - before flinging the knife mid-flight. However, although the weapon hits her target, once Lightning has bounced to a stop and surveyed the throw, she still seems unsatisfied (you know, despite pulling that off at all in the first place).

So she does it again, and again, and again, until finally, she feels like she's gotten a little better and gets ambitious enough to try something a little different. Setting her feet, she picks up a knife in both hands, jumps back again and-- abruptly loses her equilibrium in the air, so that the knives go flying off-course entirely, and she goes crashing down unceremoniously with a bark of surprise. A moment later, she's rolled to her feet, looking bewildered and displeased, and a moment after that, she looks down and notices that she's no longer herself. Again. ]

... Oh.

[ Yeah. "Oh" is right, considering she's suddenly several years younger, with longer hair and a face that's far more used to smiling than frowning-- her little sister, Serah's, actually. Furthermore, despite so many others getting to keep them, for the time being she's been stripped of her powers completely. If you... just got a knife to the kidney, then sorry, blame the Malnosso, and hopefully it didn't go too deep?

Replies will come from [livejournal.com profile] strikingusdown. ]

[ Lightning definitely catches the difference, and then herself sort of... bows her head, lacing her hands together. It's a very Serah-like gesture... and doing it doesn't really help the young woman's continued somber thought processes. ]

You must really like airships, then. [ Just like Zack apparently likes flying, which brings up some... interesting questions about their world and/or lives- coincidence, or something else? She wonders idly what the others from the same place might have turned into too. ]

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw one while we were traveling, and I always thought it'd be so much fun to ride. [She looks up to the sky, her voice picking up in its cheer--she really wants to lighten the mood somehow.] I'm pretty sure it's not the same to fly as one, but at least I got in the air, right?
strikingusdown: (how can we find - our way home)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-02 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Talking to someone who spent time being an airship like it's normal... just what has Lightning's life become, anyway? In any case, it's doubtful anything Aerith says is really going to ease Lightning's dark mood by much, but... airships are an simple enough topic to have a neutral-sounding conversation about. Plus, she is curious about this, given she actually knows very little about the other woman's home. ]

So... hm. You'd never ridden in one at all before?

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No. They're probably more common in Cocoon--there's only a few in Gaia. [She knows Cocoon's more futuristic compared to Gaia, at least by her understanding.] Most people haven't ridden one. You get around by boat or car or chocobo instead.
strikingusdown: (have we never - been safer)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
... Yeah. Hard to imagine going even a day without seeing any. [ They approach the front door, but Lightning starts doing something odd even as she keeps talking, concentrating as she stretches arms out, turns over hands, flexes fingers... ] If you're lucky, you can get a license for learning to fly starting at fifteen.

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That young? [She laughs.] Cid would have a fit... Did you learn? [Looking at those gestures there, yes.]

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ She's trying to figure out if she can cast magic in Serah's body without actually doing it, Aerith. It doesn't feel like it though, which is... well, it's certainly interesting.

And for an instant she freezes at mention of that name, but then just makes a soft hmph and quickly moves on. It's too bad that question is kind of rough on her too, though- guess what happened about that time in her life? ]
I... yeah. Not at fifteen, but the Guardian Corps trained me a few years ago anyway. Pretty standard.

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[The pause at the name has her explaining--]

Cid's another friend we picked up while traveling. He's only 32, but the way he talks about us "kids", you might think he's older! He's one of the best captains there is. I bet he'd love to hear about the technology in your world. He always dreamed of being the first man in space in ours. [...Wait. She puts a finger on her chin, pondering.] Has Cocoon ever done any space exploration?
strikingusdown: (but we're close - to the wire again)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-03 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Lightning waffles over explaining how she knows someone by that name too but--

-- That description sounds kind of familiar for another reason, actually, although-- ]

"Space?"

[ She looks strangely baffled at the question for once, pausing with her hand on the door to the inside of the apartment building. The only thing that would save her here from being completely clueless is the fact that she has done some research over how the sun and moon and stars work (in addition to that seasons thing), but... she doesn't remember that term at the moment, and only has a vague guess at what Aerith might be talking about from context.... ]

You mean...? [ Okay, no, her brows draw together, unable to think of how to phrase her question properly. These concepts are absolutely foreign to her. ]

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Blinks back except for once glance in the door, because even having lived under the plate her whole life this seems such a strange thing to cause confusion--maybe she didn't look at the sky often, but she certainly knew it was there. (And it was hard to be completely ignorant of space exploration when that was the reason she had the church to herself: it had been abandoned after a rocket crashed into the back.)]

Outer space. Out in the stars. --Oh, but the stars are too far for anyone to reach now, of course. I don't know if Cid even planned to reach the moon. He just wanted to show it could be done. I guess... you haven't.
strikingusdown: (how can we find - our way home)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-03 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
... No. Not that I know of. That's... hard to even imagine.

[ It's a little frustrating, really- as a soldier, she was actually one of the people most removed from the illusion of Cocoon's perfection... but in the end, what had seemed like a lot actually hardly mattered at all. She had been just as taken in as everyone else, and she had never seriously spent much thought about what really existed beyond Cocoon. There had never really been a reason to, and her government certainly never encouraged it.

Her mind keeps going over that in detail as she goes through the door, sighing quietly when the increased warmth inside hits her. She has to wonder if it's even worth it trying to wrap her head around a universe that's so much bigger than she'd ever thought, considering her predicament... ]

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine being out there myself.

[She also sighs at the warmth, happily--this body really isn't good at handling the cold in winter. Though she's sure that wasn't always the case, given where her parents had lived... maybe Ifalna just bundled up better than she did. She heads to her apartment, moving to open the door. She looks back at Lightning, her expression still pleasant but neutral.]

I used to be scared of the sky, actually. [It's offered up--not quite common ground, because she can't imagine Lightning with that kind of fear--but just put out there. Not everyone thinks about the great big Out There; a lot of people are happy with their place. ...Or too afraid to leave.]

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-03 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The sky? [ Okay, on one hand, to have the lights above represent not distant cities but some great unknown hanging over your head... Lightning can sort of relate. On the other, what a strange admission. Her lips thin as she waits for Aerith to open the door, though the slight tone of irritation in her voice is nothing more than her usual response to confusion, and accompanied by a backing of genuine curiosity. ] So, what? Did you just never go outside?

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I did! I wasn't that silly. [She's not annoyed though, smiling as she explains.] Lower Midgar is covered by the Plate that Upper Midgar is built on. There are places where you can see the sky between gaps, but that isn't really the same. I lived in the sector 5 slums. I knew my way around the lower city just fine, but I didn't leave or go up to the plate until I was... mm, I was 18 when I first went up.
strikingusdown: (Default)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-03 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Wait, what? Lower and Upper Midgar? Slums? Never properly seeing the sky until you were eighteen?! It's funny how even after the things they were just talking about, how honestly flabbergasted Lightning is at this. Even if as always, her reaction is pretty muted in proportion. She stares. ]

... That's insane.

[ It... might just explain that fascination with flying, though. ]

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay, this time she pouts.] It's not really that bad! I mean...I know it was silly to be scared... but at least I saw it.

[...Aaand they can get into the apartment now.]

[ Lightning feels a bit awkward as she enters Aerith's apartment. It's just that the idea of living in any sort of hardship for a lengthened amount of time... that is totally bizarre to her. She supported herself and her sister on her own starting at the age of fifteen, true, and she's lived on the run from what amounts to civilization itself... but that's not really the same as what she gleans from Aerith's description. She can't help but think just how crushing living like that must be, without the freedom of the open air above you. Cocoon might be a cage, but it's a nice cage, and its inhabitants are well taken care of. ]

Hm. Better than nothing...

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aerith slips off her coat and hangs it up in the closet, gesturing for Lightning's to hang up as well. She remembers how you handle coats in your house. >_>]

Much better. I've traveled a good part of the world now, so I don't feel so sheltered.
strikingusdown: (how can we find - our way home)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-04 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. That... actually makes sense. Is this 'make Lightning feel vaguely stupid for missing common concepts' day or something? No comment as she follows suit, but then once her coat is off, she... pauses, right hand over the outside of the opposite upper arm. Despite her semi-subtle attempts at deducing it outside, she's actually not certain if she wants to find out if the body she's in is currently bearing a fal'Cie's Brand. At this point, either way is painful. ]

Makes sense. Leaving your comfort zone, and all...

[ She walks into the main room farther, but obviously, she seems very distracted with her arms still crossed strangely. Come to think of it, Aerith's never mentioned why they were traveling, but... ]

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
[One has to pay attention to the little gestures, considering Light doesn't say much, and Aerith does. Though..she doesn't know what to make of it. Light's not gripping the arm like it hurts her or anything...]

Right, just like that.
strikingusdown: (won't give up - never never)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-04 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The gesture might make a little more sense when Lightning moves that hand from arm to upper chest, eyes downcast in thought. Instead of making another only semi-related comment, however, she falls silent again while she pulls off her gloves... and then jumps right into something else before Aerith has a chance to pick the conversation back up herself. ]

I don't think I'm a l'Cie right now.

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[She pauses for a long moment, finally sinking onto the couch.] No...you wouldn't be. Because it's branded on your body, so with that changed... [She frowns slightly. Why couldn't the Malnosso fix it?] At least there's some time to not worry about it progressing.

[...But from the sound of it, Hope had one too.]
strikingusdown: (won't be struck - by the weather)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-05 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To my body... [ Even though they've already played with the idea, that still brings up some weird implications, to say the least. Lightning's concentration is evident as she leans against the end of the couch, nearly admitting that as Serah she should still have a Brand... but distracted by various explanations she can come up by herself for its absence. ]

If the Brands aren't actually connected to the soul somehow, then that... that still means the final stages act to trap it when it gets that far.

But nobody knows what happens to a l'Cie who dies before that happens. It could still be connected. [ Sullen and just thinking aloud there. Also, a thought: if Lightning had let Sazh kill Serah, would she have just turned Cie'th anyway before getting the chance to crystallize? Would she and the others have turned if the plans to execute them had worked? ]

...I can't think of anything else but:

[identity profile] gardenerofgaia.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that's so morbid. No one's dying here.

[And Aerith has gone back to herself here. This has nothing to do with me getting tired of the same two icons, no sir.]
strikingusdown: (won't give up - never never)

[personal profile] strikingusdown 2011-02-06 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ At that Lightning just goes and stares for several moments far too long, expression tight, before deliberately turning her face away. It's morbid, yeah, but there's not much she can do about that. Also what, this place is so, so weird with all this changing stuff. ]

Then we'd better figure out a way to get the Brands off. Quick. It's not just me we have to worry about now.
